Plus classics from Cannonball Adderley and Alice Coltrane, and music from jazz harpist Carol Robbins, the Dafnis Prieto Big Band, the Chicago Soul Jazz Collective, Jack Kilby & the Front Line, pianist (and late night TV band leader) Jon Batiste, and vibes player Joe Locke.

Night Train marks birthdays of Eddie Harris, Russell Gunn, Martin Taylor, and Jelly Roll Morton (including a Morton special in hour two of the show); highlights more music from October featured artist Yusef Lateef; features new music from Dave Stryker, and Teodross Avery (with a tribute to Thelonious Monk); and we’ll also hear from newly named ‘genius grant’ recipient Cecile McLorin Salvant.
Wednesday, October 21
Music tonight on the Night Train from pianist Fred Hersch, bassist Marc Johnson (including music he did as part of Bill Evans last trio), flutist Ali Ryerson, saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, and legendary trumpeter, and bop and world jazz pioneer Dizzy Gillespie (featured in a special in hour two) – all born on this date. Plus new music from drummer Jeff Hamilton and a posthumous album from Latin jazz percussionist Ray Mantilla.

Night Train explores the connections between jazz and a variety of styles and rhythms from around the world tonight. We’ll hear music from October featured artist and world jazz pioneer Yusef Lateef; a wide range of Latin jazz from the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Allstars, Jane Bunnett (also featured tonight on Global Village for her birthday), Eddie Henderson, Gonzalo Rubalcaba with Aymee Nuviola, and the Raices Jazz Orchestra; Asian-influenced selections from Nguyen Le, Jim Snidero, the John Mayer-Joe Harriott Double Quintet, and Cosmic Vibrations; and the African inspiration in music of singer Somi.
