As part of the February Carnival Month feature, Global Village heads to Brazil, home to some of the world’s liveliest Carnival celebrations, for a program devoted to a wide array of styles and artists from that music-rich nation. We’ll hear some classic Jobim, Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida, Brazilian mandolinist Hamilton de Holanda, the “Queen of the Amazon” Dona Onete, modern forro from Forro in the Dark and Sociedade Recreativa, Brazilian afrobeat from Zebrabeat Afro-Amazonia Orquestra, and more.

As part of the February Carnival Month feature, Global Village heads to Trinidad, home to some of the world’s liveliest Carnival celebrations, for a program devoted to steel drum music. We'll hear some of the legendary steel orchestras of Trinidad featured on the great Caribbean Carnival Series, also Monty Alexander's Ivory & Steel group with pan player Othello Molineaux, steel drum player Andy Narell with calypsonian Relator, and more.
Wednesday, February 5
Global Village goes global soul, with a wide array of artists from around the world doing soul and funk inspired music. We’ll hear some soul from Togo, Latin soul from Mongo Santamaria and Poncho Sanchez, highlife soul from a new album from Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, Japanese folk boogaloo from the Minyo Crusaders (the Global Village top pick for 2019), funky Bahamian sounds from The Beginning of the End, and more.
Thursday, February 6
Global Village marks the birthday of reggae legend Bob Marley with music from his classic recordings and from a wide range of covers of his songs from such artists as I-Three members Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt, Ivorian star Tiken Jah Fakoly, roots groups the Gladiators and Inner Circle, original Wailer Bunny Wailer, Rebel Tumbao, and more.

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of recently released and forthcoming world music albums. Among the highlights this time:
Rare sounds from different parts of the world including music from Manhu from southwestern China, and compilations featuring ‘70s and ‘80s music from the Indian Ocean (Soul Sega Sa, Vol. 2) and Sao Tomé and Principe (Leve Leve). Also Portuguese guitarist Custodio Castelo, a 20th anniversary release from American Afrobeat group Antibalas, contemporary Congolese music from Bantou Mentale, Finnish mandolinist Petri Hakala with accordionist Markku Lepisto, the second release from Les Amazones d’Afrique, and Indian jazz fusion from the Purna Loka Ensemble.
