Still recovering from Hurricane Maria and hit more recently by a powerful earthquake, Puerto Rico has faced serious challenges in recent years. Global Village pays tribute to the strong spirit of the people of Puerto Rico in a program devoted to music of the island and from musicians of Puerto Rican descent. We’ll hear folkloric, Latin jazz and salsa sounds from such great artists and groups as Tito Puente, Batacumbele, Yomo Toro, Plena Libre, Eddie Palmieri, and the Nostalgique Porto Rico set that was named Compilation of 2019 by the Transglobal World Music Chart.

Global Village pays tribute to one of the giants of Crescent City music, Allen Toussaint, on his birthday. The program highlights music from his rare albums in the ‘70s to later projects, including the Grammy-nominated release, The River in Reverse, which he did with Elvis Costello. Plus New Orleans R&B classics he wrote and produced for Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey and others, and covers of his songs from Robert Palmer, the Band, the Pointer Sisters, and more.

Global Village continues Awards Week with a show devoted to world music nominees and award winners of the past year, including artists picked by the Grammys, Canadian Folk Music Awards, the Transglobal World Music Chart, and Songlines magazine. Among the artists featured are Bokante (featured this month in our Global Village at the Ground Up Music Festival concert series), Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba, Angelique Kidjo, Third World and more.

As part of ‘Awards Week’ for the January Best of the Year feature, Global Village this time highlights world and world-inspired music from Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winners – among them, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, George Harrison, Bob Marley, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and artist Ravi Shankar. And we sneak in a few other award titles, including a Juno-nominated release from Ayrad, and a Grammy and Latin Grammy winning album from Carlos Vives.

Global Village heads back to Miami Beach for another program in our festival series featuring concert performances from the innovative and eclectic Ground Up Music Festival. This time it’s the nine-member world music ensemble Bokante. The ensemble brings together musicians from five continents who have worked with such acclaimed performers as Snarky Puppy, Sting, the Lee Boys, YoYo Ma, Väsen, David Crosby's Lighthouse Band, and Cecile McLoren Salvant, to name just a few. Together they create a dynamic and dramatic new sound, with roots in African, Caribbean, and Arabic styles, along with American rock and blues - that all merge into powerful and danceable rhythms with sharp social messaging. We’ll hear them (along with a special guest appearance from Richard Bona) from a dynamic performance they gave at Ground Up shortly after the release of their album What Heat, which was just nominated for a World Music Grammy.
