It’s Awards Week on the Night Train! In conjunction with the January Best of 2019 feature, the show this week highlights various award winners and nominees, including music tonight from the Grammy nominated Brian Lynch Big Band, and 2020 NEA Jazz Master Reggie Workman. Also birthday salutes to guitar legend Joe Pass and trombonist and arranger Melba Liston (with music she did with Randy Weston and Dinah Washington in hour one, and a Jazz Profiles special about her in hour two).

Night Train continues Awards Week, highlighting winners, nominees and honorees of the past year, with music from Grammy nominated releases from guitarist Julian Lage and Chick Corea & the Spanish Heart Band. Plus more show favorites of the past year, and birthday celebrations for bassist Mark Egan and drummer Grady Tate.
Wednesday, January 15
Awards Week continues on the Night Train with a show devoted to a variety of nominees and honorees, including Grammy nominated releases from Joey DeFrancesco, the Joshua Redman Quartet, Sara Gazarek, the Anat Cohen Tentet. Willie Nelson, and Catherine Russell (also a Night Train favorite of 2019 and featured in a special in hour two of the show). We’ll also hear from Itamar Erez (nominated for Solo Instrumentalist in the Canadian Folk Music Awards), 2020 NEA Jazz Master Roscoe Mitchell (with the Art Ensemble of Chicago), and blues guitarist Earl Hooker (who was born on this date and whose biography, Earl Hooker – Blues Master, is being inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame this year.)

Night Train highlights live recordings tonight – including performances from the Newport Jazz Festival from Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and Lambert, Hendricks & Bavan; along with live performances from pianists Edward Simon, Ahmad Jamal, Gene Harris, and Elio Villafranca, saxophonist Elias Haslanger, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
