Yusef Lateef Feature Plus Birthdays Of Mahalia Jackson, Philip Catherine, Andy Bey And More

Monday, October 26

Night Train marks birthdays of trumpeter Eddie Henderson (as a leader and with Herbie Hancock, Benny Golson and Kenny Barron), third stream French pianist Jacques Loussier, and gospel legend Mahalia Jackson (including as part of Ellington’s Black, Brown and Beige suite). We’ll also hear more music from October featured artist Yusef Lateef from his own albums and as part of the Cannonball Adderley Sextet. Plus recent ‘genius grant’ recipient Cecile McLorin Salvant, and new titles from the John Fedchock NY Sextet, pianist Miki Yamanaka, the John Daversa Quintert’s Cuarentena project, and Crescent City vibes player Jason Marsalis.

Tuesday, October 27

Some international jazz sounds tonight as Night Train marks birthdays of Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine (including on a new album with German bassist Martin Wind), and Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen. Plus more music from October featured artist Yusef Lateef (with Grant Green and with Nat Adderley’s Big Sax Section), newly named ‘genius grant’ recipient Cecile McLorin Salvant, and new music from JD Allen, Bill Frisell, Ella Fitzgerald (a previously unreleased Berlin concert performance), the Mark Masters Ensemble (with music of Alec Wilder), Bobby Watson, Steve Cardenas, and Joshua Redman (with his original quartet lineup of Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade together for the first time since the mid-‘90s).

Wednesday, October 28

Night Train marks birthdays of bassist Glen Moore (with singer Nancy King and with Oregon, the chamber jazz ensemble he co-founded), singer and pianist Andy Bey, and Latin jazz big band pioneer Chico O’Farrill (including a special in hour two with his son, Arturo, who began his career in his father’s band and now heads up some of the more adventurous projects in contemporary Latin jazz). We’ll also get to music from October featured artist Yusef Lateef, and the latest releases from the Dafnis Prieto Sextet, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, and Swingadelic.

Thursday, October 29

Night Train wraps up the month-long centennial birthday party for Yusef Lateef with music he did as a leader and guesting with acclaimed bassist Paul Chambers. The show marks birthdays of saxophonist Zoot Sims (including with a Jazz Profiles special in hour two) andthe ‘Queen of Boogie’ Hadda Brooks. And there’s new music from Latin jazz band Mongorama, Brazilian pianist, composer and arranger Antonio Adolfo, saxophonist Cory Weeds, and pianist John Di Martino (with a tribute to Billy Strayhorn).
