Night Train celebrates Canadian Thanksgiving Day with a show devoted to music from Canadian artists. We’ll hear music from pianists Oscar Peterson and Oliver Jones, bassists Dave Young and Neil Swainson, singers Molly Johnson and Holly Cole, saxophonists Cory Weeds and PJ Perry, and jazz versions of Joni Mitchell songs from Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock and Laila Biali, along with music from Mitchell’s Mingus album.
Tuesday, October 13
Night Train features new, previously-unreleased recordings from Ella Fitzgerald and Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers. There’s more music from October featured artist Yusef Lateef. And the show marks birthdays of vibes player Johnny Lytle, saxophonists Pharoah Sanders and Lee Konitz, bassist Ray Brown, and one of the giants of jazz piano Art Tatum (including a Jazz Profiles special in hour two).
Wednesday, October 14
It’s a “flute thing” tonight on the Night Train – highlighting a variety of styles and artists featuring the flute. We’ll hear “Flute Thing,” a blast from the past from the Blues Project, along with music from flutists Ali Ryerson, Herbie Mann, Nestor Torres, Hubert Laws, Dave Valentin, Andrea Brachfeld, Joe Farrell, and October featured artist Yusef Lateef. We’ll also hear new music from the Claire Daly Band, Ryan Cohan, Artemis, Mark Egan & Danny Gottlieb, the John Beasley Monk’estra, and Conrad Herwig’s Latin Side of Horace Silver.
Thursday, October 15
Night Train highlights new music tonight from the Radam Schwartz Organ Big Band (with an Aretha Franklin song), Christian McBride’s salute to the music Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery and Oliver Nelson did together (and some of the original inspiration with a track from the classic Dynamic Duo album), and in-demand drummer Joe Farnsworth (with special guest Wynton Marsalis). We’ll also mark birthdays of Erin McKeown (from her Blossom Dearie tribute – and music, of course, from Blossom herself), pianist Bill Charlap, and pianist and singer Freddy Cole, Nat’s brother, who passed away earlier this year. Cole is also featured in a special in hour two of the show.
