Yusef Lateef Centennial, Mark Whitfield, Larry Young And Jazz Guitars

Monday, October 5

Night Train marks birthdays of trombonist Clifton Anderson with music he did with his uncle and legendary saxophonist Sonny Rollins, as well as pianists Falkner Evans and Tord Gustavsen. We’ll also hear music from October featured artist Yusef Lateef, focusing on some of his flute-based music. Plus new music from drummer and “genius grant” recipient Dafnis Prieto, saxophonist Grant Stewart, drummer and WSU alum Matt Wilson, and the Raices Jazz Orchestra.

Tuesday, October 6

Night Train marks birthdays of pianist Norman Simmons (as a leader and alongside Joe Williams, Etta Jones, Carol Sloane, Red Holloway, and Everett Greene), and guitarist Mark Whitfield (as a leader and with Jimmy Smith and on Christian McBride’s new album in tribute to the music Jimmy Smith did with guitarist Wes Montgomery). We’ll also hear more from October featured artist Yusef Lateef as Night Train celebrates his centennial birthday all month long. And there’s new music from Isiah J. Thompson (an album in tribute to Buddy Montgomery), the 3D Jazz Trio (rhythm section of the Diva Jazz Orchestra), Dr. Michael White (in a new live release), and trumpeter Bill Warfield with his Hell’s Kitchen Funk Orchestra.

Wednesday, October 7

Night Train continues the October feature, celebrating the centennial birthday of multi-instrumentalist and world-jazz pioneer Yusef Lateef; marks birthdays of Cuban pianist and composer Alfredo Rodriguez and pioneering post-bop organist Larry Young (featured in a special in hour two of the show); and features new albums from baritone sax and flute player Claire Daly (in a tribute to Rahsaan Roland Kirk) and John DiMartino (with a tribute to composer Billy Strayhorn)

Thursday, October 8

Great guitars are the focus tonight on the Night Train, with music from Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Wes Montgomery, Eric Clapton (with Wynton Marsalis), Russell Malone, Pat Martino, and the Deep Blue Organ Trio featuring guitarist Bobby Broom.  We’ll also hear tribute albums including Swingadelic’s salute to Duke Pearson, Dee Dee Bridgewater’s tribute to Billie Holiday, Bill Frisell’s collection of songs from John Lennon, Alan Pasqua doing music of Bill Evans, and Conrad Herwig showcasing the “Latin Side of Herbie Hancock.”
