Global Drums, Boogaloo, Marc Ribot & Bob Dylan Birthdays

Monday, May 20

Global Village marks National Day of Cameroon with a program devoted to music by artists from that African nation. We’ll hear an update of Manu Dibango’s big international hit Soul Makossa; Sam Fan Thomas’s big makossa hit, African Typic Collection; the bikutsi rock of Les Tetes Brulees; singer-songwriters Gino Sitson, Blick Bassy, and Henri Dikongue; and former Zap Mama member Sally Nyolo.

Tuesday, May 21

Global Village marks the birthday of critically acclaimed guitarist and much-in-demand session player Marc Ribot. We’ll hear music with one of several groups he leads, Los Cubanos Postizos, and guest appearances with a wide array of artists, from Tom Waits (with whom he made some of his earliest appearances on record) to Robert Plant & Allison Kraus, Brazil’s Vinicius Cantuaria and Caetano Veloso, Afro-Peruvian star Susana Baca, Colombian rock band Aterciopelados, brother Greg Ribot and more.

Wednesday, May 22

This time in the Global Village, we once again ‘give the drummer some’ for the May Drum Month feature, in a program devoted to an eclectic lineup of drum and percussion masters. We’ll hear tabla master Zakir Hussain with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer (the artists featured next week in our monthly Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival series);  Nii Okai Tagoe, former percussionist with Osibisa; Max Roach’s all-percussion M’Boom ensemble; the world jazz sounds of Bones & Tones, Adam Rudolph’s Moving Pictures, Manu Katche, and Minu Cinelu; and master congueros Mongo Santamaria and Poncho Sanchez.

Thursday, May 23

Global Village devotes the entire show Latin soul boogaloo. We’ll hear classics and rarities from the all-too-brief period of the music heyday from Joe Cuba, Joe Bataan, Johnny Colon, the Latinaires and more – and since we’re featuring drummers this month, there’s some boogaloo sounds from Willie Bobo, Mongo Santamaria, and Ray Barretto.

Friday, May 24

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Bob Dylan in a show devoted to world music artists doing Dylan songs and world music-influenced versions of his work. Among the artists featured are Cuba’s Vocal Sampling, the art-folk Quercus trio (June Tabor, Huw Warren & Iain Bellamy), the all-star Hudson group of Jack DeJohnette, Larry Grenadier, John Medeski and John Scofield,  Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Robert Plant, Toots Hibbert, and more.

Strange Currency and Crossroads also celebrate Dylan’s birthday tonight.
