Crescent City Birthdays – Cyril Neville & Allen Toussaint + Best Of 2017 & Esquivel

Monday, January 8

This time in the Global Village, it’s Africa-Latin, the meeting of African and Afro-Cuban music and musicians. We’ll hear selections from the East Africa compilation Urgent Jumping, Cameroon’s Richard Bona from the first project he did with an Afro-Cuban band, Angolan artist Ricardo Lemvo and his Latin group Makina Loca, Congolese Rumba and Soukous stars Wendo Kolosoy, Kanda Bongo Man and Kekele, Senegal’s Orchestra Baobab, and the meeting of African and Latin musicians in the group Africando.

Tuesday, January 9

Global Village highlights some African blues in this visit – including music from guitar greats Ali Farka Toure and Djelimady Tounkara, the ‘desert blues’ of Bombino and Imarhan, blues harmonica player JeConte with the Mali All Stars, world-jazz guitarist Leni Stern, and the Soul of John Black.

Wednesday, January 10

Global Village marks the birthday of Cyril Neville with music he did as a solo artist and in guest appearances with Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, the Wild Magnolias, and Galactic. We also remember Roswell Rudd and continue the January feature of show favorites of 2017 and the centennial birthday celebration for lounge music great, Juan Garcia Esquivel.

Thursday, January 11

The January Best of 2017 feature continues on the Global Village with music from the Grammy nominated Bobo Yeye compilation; show favorites from Alash, Orchestre Les Mangelepa, and the Zaire 74 set; and also Vicente Amigo - a Latin Grammy winner, Grammy nominee, and the debut artist in a new concert series starting later this month on the Global Village featuring world music performances from the Savannah Music Festival. Friday, January 12

Global Village continues the January Best of 2017 and Esquivel centennial feature, along with birthday celebrations this time for Crescent City great Allen Toussaint, world-jazz trumpeter Olu Dara, and saxophonist Roland Alphonso of the Skatalites.
