Birthdays Of Cassandra Wilson, Jim Hall, Dave Brubeck & Disney Jazz For Walt’s

Night Train begins the week with birthday salutes to jazz guitar great Jim Hall and contemporary vocal star Cassandra Wilson. We’ll hear Hall as a leader, in a duo setting with Ron Carter, and with Paul Desmond, and the Chico Hamilton Quintet; and Wilson is featured on solo albums and with Tom Harrell, and Steve Turre. Plus new music from Jerome Jennings and Christian Sands (who both worked with Christian McBride), vibes player Behn Gillece, and the Bill Charlap Trio.

Tuesday 12.5.17

Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to mark Walt Disney’s birthday with jazz versions of songs from Disney films – including music from the new Jazz Loves Disney 2 album, Dave Brubeck’s Dave Digs Disney album, the Jazz Network’s Beauty and the Beast album of Disney music and more. It’s also the birthday of two acclaimed Italian pianists Enrico Pieranunzi and Stefano Bollani, and of saxophonist Corey Weeds and Night Train has music from all three, including Weeds’ new album featuring jazz versions of songs from Earth, Wind & Fire.

Wednesday 12.6.17

Birthdays of tenor player and jazz oboe pioneer Bob Cooper, bassists Harvie S and Miroslav Vitous, and the legendary pianist Dave Brubeck (including an early recording with his Octet, a later version of “Take Five,” and a Jazz Profiles special in hour two). Plus new music from singer Stacey Kent, flutist Nestor Torres and guitarist Corey Christiansen.

Thursday 12.7.17

Night Train highlights some new standards tonight – include a Willie Dixon classic by Hank Crawford, Freddy Cole “Singing the Blues,” an Aretha Franklin hit done by the Brad Goode Quartet,  Ben Flocks doing Dylan, Dave Stryker and David Fathead Newman with Curtis Mayfield covers, and a Stevie Wonder tune from Theo Croker. Plus jazz legends Stanley Turrentine, Charlie Haden and Ahmad Jamal.
