Another exploration of global guitars this time in the Global Village, including more steel guitar for the October feature from Nigeria’s King Sunny Ade and Michael Messer’s Mitra, along with guitarist Derek Gripper with kora player Tunde Jegede, Buena Vista Social Club guitarist Manuel Galban, desert blues guitarist Ramon Goose, and Canadian guitar wizard Harry Manx.

It’s an Afrobeat extravaganza this time in the Global Village. Highlights include music from Tony Allen as a leader and on a classic from Fela, the sound of Ghanian Afrobeat, and Afrobeat inspired music from Brazil’s Bixiga 70 and Spain’s Alma Afrobeat Ensemble.
Wednesday, October 25
Global Village marks the birthday of guitarist, composer and bossa nova pioneer Roberto Menescal with music he did with his own group, with his son’s nova bossa nova group Bossacucanova, and in covers of his songs from Tamba 4 and Gabor Szabo. Plus more steel guitar sounds from Lucky Oceans and V.M. Bhatt, and new music from Baraka Moon, Matthieu Saglio with Jose El Piru, and Quadro Nuevo with Cairo Steps.
Thursday, October 26
World violins and cellos are featured this time in the Global Village, including music from cellist Ophélie Gaillard’s Iberian project Alvorada, the Hot Club of the Americas led by violinist Federico Britos, violinist Daniel Weltlinger’s tribute to Django Reinhardt, the musical meeting of cellist Vincent Segal and kora master Ballake Sissoko, and an African project from violinist Jean-Luc Ponty.

Several world jazz artists have birthdays today – drummer Manu Katche, bassist Arild Andersen, and guitarist Philip Catherine. Plus some sacred steel guitars this time for the October feature with music from the Campbell Brothers, and new releases from Monoswezi, Leila Gobi, Songhoy Blues, and Pipo Romero.
