Night Train marks the birthday of Woody Herman with one of his classics and a new album from Harry Allen in tribute to the Herman band’s Four Brothers lineup. It’s also the birthday of legendary jazz vocalist Betty Carter and Night Train features some classic tracks from her and a Jazz Profiles Carter special in hour two. Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency tonight to celebrate the 75th birthday of Taj Mahal, highlighting the jazz side of his work with music he did with Wynton Marsalis, Bob Stewart, and on his Grammy-winning album Senor Blues. Plus more music from May featured artist Ron Carter (with Horace Silver) and new music from Jeff “Tain” Watts and Chick Corea’s new three-disc birthday concerts set.

Night Train marks birthdays of vibes player Christian Tamburr, trombonist Kai Winding, and also Kansas City great Big Joe Turner. There’s also new music from Kansas City from Matt Otto with Ensemble Iberica and a special about Kansas City jazz in hour two of the show. Plus Organissimo’s new soul jazz organ tribute to the Beatles and more from May featured artist Ron Carter as a leader and guesting with soul jazz tenor man Gene Ammons.
