Spring Jazz, Jazz Fest Artists & Birthdays Of George Benson, Dave Grisman & More
Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate the first day of Spring, with new and classic spring songs from Jazz Fest headliner Pat Metheny with Jim Hall, Larry Coryell with Philip Catherine, Billie Holiday, Bennie Golson, Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter, Clifford Brown and more. And a birthday salute to pianist, singer and painter Meredith D’Ambrosio, who nearly always includes a song about spring on her albums.
It’s Matt Wilson Night tonight on the Night Train. The popular drummer and WSU alum has appeared on scores of albums as a guest artist and over a dozen under his own name and will be appearing with Pat Metheny at this year’s Wichita Jazz Festival. Tonight’s show highlights music from his Quartet along with guest appearances with Curtis Stigers, Ted Nash, the Either/Orchestra, Janis Siegel, Bill Mays and, in hour two of the show, in a special performance at the Newport Jazz Festival.
A guitar night tonight on the Night Train with birthday salutes to George Benson and Melvin Sparks; music from March featured artist Pat Metheny (with music he did with guitarist John Scofield, with bassist Charlie Haden and with his 2000 Trio), Larry Coryall’s most recent album, and new music from the Montreal Guitare Trio.
Night Train marks birthdays of vibes players Stefon Harris and Dave Pike, pianist and songwriter Dave Frishberg, and newgrass pioneer David Grisman (including a live performance in hour two with Grisman at the Savannah Music Festival). Plus more music from Wichita Jazz Festival artists, including jazz fusion pioneer Jerry Hahn (with King & Moore) and headliner Pat Metheny with vibes player Gary Burton, whom he first met here at the 1973 Wichita Jazz Festival – and some music for spring training.
