Visits To Burkina Faso, The Silk Road, Africa And South America

Yesterday (December 11) was Independence Day in Burkina Faso and Global Village marks the occasion with a show devoted to music from that West African nation. Highlights include music from one of the country’s most revered musicians, Amadou Balake; pioneering electronic group Burkina Electric; the internationally acclaimed group Farafina; traditional artists Gabin Dabire and Le Freres Coulibaly; and the Bambara Mystic Soul compilation that highlighted the rich and diverse music of ‘70s Burkina Faso.
Tuesday, December 13
Global Village journeys along the ancient Silk Road trade route – with stops, traditional and contemporary, in Pakistan, India, Turkmenistan, Somalia, Syria, and China. Artists featured include Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the Guo Brothers, Waaberi, Fareed Haque, Shanren, Ashkhabad, and the Kronos Quartet.
Wednesday, December 14
Global Village highlights musicians from across the African continent - including soukous pioneer Papa Wemba, the Lion of Zimbabwe – Thomas Mapfumo, Senegal’s Pape and Cheikh, the Tuareg group Toumast, and Ugandan exile Geoffrey Oryema. Plus Otis Redding, Grace Jones and Black Slate.
Thursday, December 15
Global Village marks the birthday of Grammy-winning salsa and Latin jazz piano legend Eddie Palmieri with music from across his career. Plus new music from the Urgent Jumping compilation of rare East African music, Ecuadorian Latin rock guitarist and songwriter Eljuri and world/sound band the Olympians.
Friday, December 16
Global Village explores South American jazz with music from the Gabriel Alegria Afro Peruvian Sextet, Colombian percussionist Samuel Torre, Brazil’s Forro in the Dark and Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Jovino Santos Neto, Diego Urcola and Dino Saluzzi from Argentina, and some “false Bahians” - Grupo Falso Baiano - who play choro-jazz.
