Monday, October 10

Global Village marks birthdays of Cuban-born percussionist Francisco Aguabella, songwriter and singer Kirsty MacColl, and Cyril Neville (of the Neville Brothers). And we head to the movies for music from Fellini films written by Nino Rota and performed by Sexmob, Enrico Rava, Enrico Pieranunzi, and Richard Galliano.

Tuesday, October 11

Global Village celebrates Pulaski Memorial Day (by proclamation of President Obama in 2015) to honor the Polish Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski and Polish Americans.  The program highlights a wide array of contemporary  Polish bands ranging from traditional and avant-folk, to African, klezmer and jazz influenced groups. Plus American artists – including Polka King Frankie Yankovic , punk polka pioneers Brave Combo, and U.S. based Polish world-jazz singer Grazyna Auguscik – along with a polka classic from Berlin’s 17 Hippies. Artists featured include Warsaw Afrobeat Orchestra, Maria Pomianowska & Groupe Gainde, Janusz Prusinowski Trio, Kapela Maliszow, Tegie Chlopy, Motion Trio and Jarek Bester.

Wednesday, October 12

In conjunction with the Global Village Cuba feature, it’s a show devoted to the many varied sounds and influences of Cuban music – from groundbreaking bands like Irakere and Buena Vista Social Club, to contemporary jazz performers like Harold Lopez-Nussa and Jane Bunnett & Maqueque, along with some different sounds of Cuban-influenced Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab, the Cuba-based Haitian group Desandann, and classical meets Cuba with the Klazz Brothers & Cuba Percussion.

Thursday, October 13

Global Village celebrates birthdays of saxophonist and 2016 NEA Jazz Master Pharoah Sanders (with music he did with vocalist Leon Thomas), guitarist Simon Nicol of Fairport Convention fame, and acclaimed Pakistani devotional singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Plus more Cuban sounds for the October feature – this time for Cuban doo-wop group Los Zafiros, and the Cuban-influenced band San Lazaro from Melbourne Australia – and new music from the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, and Constantinople.

Friday, October 14

Global Village has the ‘blues’– with blue and blues related tunes from Richie Havens, Terry Callier, Boris Kovac & La Campanella, I.K. Dairo & the Blue Spots, RealWorld’s Big Blue Ball project, and the Rough Guide to African Blues among the featured selections.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
