Ska & Reggae Night @ The Movies, Cuban Music, David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) & New Month/New Music Time

Monday, October 3

Get out the popcorn because this time in the Global Village, ska and reggae go to the movies – as the show highlights movie themes done ska style along with music from reggae movies, including the classic The Harder They Come. Among the artists featured are the Skatalites, Jimmy Cliff, Sly & Robbie, and Madness.

Tuesday, October 4

Global Village heads to the Caribbean for music from Cuba (for the October feature), Jamaica, Trinidad, Martinique, and more. Artists featured include Cuba’s acclaimed Buena Vista Social club, also Kali, the Solo Harmonites, Ray Obiedo, and Playing for Change 3. Plus some Caribbean inspired music from jazz great Ornette Coleman.

Wednesday, October 5

Global Village highlights music from reggae star Delroy Wilson and salsa singer and songwriter Ismael Rivera for their birthdays; and for the October Cuban/American feature showcases music from Cubanismo, Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz, and Richard Bona’s new album- which is his first Afro-Cuban project, with Mandekan Cubano.

Thursday, October 6

Global Village celebrates the birthday of David Hidalgo with music he did with Los Lobos and as a special guest with Los Super Seven, Cuban guitarist Eliades Ochoa, the Blind Boys of Alabama and Herbie Hancock. Plus reggae hitmaker Millie Small for her birthday, and new music from the Sachel Ensemble, Quantic, and Palo!

Friday, October 7

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of new world music releases.  Among the highlights this time:

Urgent Jumping – a new compilation of classic ‘70s East African sounds

The new generation Skatalites band

Ecuadorian singer, guitarist and songwriter Eljuri

The next generation Macedonian brass band, the Dzambo Agusevi Orchestra

The Refugees for Refugees project

Mauritania’s Noura Mint Seymali

And the Afrobeat inspired Maputo Queens release from Etienne de la Sayette.
