Brass Bands, Charles Brown & Cannonball Adderley

Monday 9.12.16

Tonight on the Night Train, a wonderful group of artists celebrating birthdays - acclaimed trombonist (and conch shell player) Steve Turre, trumpeter Brian Lynch, tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton, soul jazz organist Papa John DeFrancesco, and singer/pianist Champian Fulton. Plus new music from the Eric Hargett Trio (with Papa John's son Joey DeFrancesco), Rene Marie (in her first set of all original material), and drummer Karl Latham with a set of ‘new standards’.

Tuesday 9.13.16

Night Train marks the birthday of Charles Brown, whose sophisticated, late night sound mingled blues and jazz and served as a bridge between the music of Nat Cole and that of Ray Charles. We’ll highlight music from both his early career and later comeback recordings on the show. Plus more brass band sounds for the September feature, including music from Arizona’s Bad Cactus Brass Band and the Crescent City’s Olympia Brass Band – and there’s new music from guitarist Dave Stryker (with another set of funky ‘new standards’ on Eight Track II), Catherine Russell (Harlem on My Mind), Miami saxophonist Tom McCormick, and pianist Cyrus Chestnut.

Wednesday 9.14.16

Night Train marks birthdays of Cuban jazz legend Cachao, and saxophonist Oliver Lake – a founding member of the innovative World Saxophone Quartet. Plus more brass band sounds – from the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Rebirth Brass Band – for the September feature, and new music from Houston Person with Ron Carter, Saltman Knowles, Corey Christiansen, and Edward Simon.

Thursday 9.15.16

Night Train continues the September brass band feature with music from the New Birth Brass Band and a second-line flavored piece from the Crescent Super Band. Plus a birthday salute to jazz saxophone great Cannonball Adderley with music he did under his own name and with Miles Davis, including a special in hour two about the classic album, Kind of Blue, which included Adderley as part of the lineup.
