Tonight on the Night Train, birthday salutes to drummer Carl Allen, and ‘The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald, including a Jazz Profiles special featuring Ella in hour two of the show. Also a new release featuring music from one of Phil Woods’ last performances, and singer Mary Stallings’ cover of one of April featured artist Benny Carter’s most popular songs.
Night Train continues with more music from April featured artist (and this year’s Jazz Appreciation Month honoree) Benny Carter, including music he did with Oscar Peterson, and covers of his songs from Marian McPartland and on new albums from Stacey Kent, and Scott Hamilton with the Jeff Hamilton Trio. Plus a new version of Claude Bolling’s "Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio", and birthday salutes to Jimmy Giuffre and one of the greats of L.A.’s Central Avenue jazz scene, Teddy Edwards (including a rare track he did featuring Tom Waits).
Tonight on the Night Train, music from April featured artist Benny Carter with special guests Shirley Horn and Diana Krall –birthday salutes to Connie Kay (drummer with the Modern Jazz Quartet), bassist Martin Wind, and guitarist Lionel Loueke (featured in a live performance from the Savannah Music Festival in hour two of the show) – and new music from Ira Hill, Danny Mixon, and Julian Lage.
Night Train wraps up its month long salute to Benny Carter; celebrates birthdays of Latin jazz pioneer Mario Bauza, guitarist Steve Khan, and singer/pianist Blossom Dearie; and highlights new music from Mike Freeman’s ZonaVibe, saxophonist Erene Terakubo, and the Great American Music Experience.
