Global Village highlights some wind instruments from around the world, including the Indian brass band Rajasthan Express, Romanian brass band (and April featured artists) Fanfare Ciocarlia, the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, saxophonist and 2016 NEA Jazz Master Pharoah Sanders, Argentine saxophonist Gato Barbieri, bass clarinetist Oran Etkin and more.

Global Village highlights Roma brass and other bands from the Balkans, and some artists and bands from other parts of the world inspired by them. Among the artists featured – April featured artists Fanfare Ciocarlia, Serbia’s Boban & Marko Markovic Orkestar, Macedonia’s Kocani Orkestra, Slovakia’s Balkansambel, and American groups the Raya Brass Band, Slavic Soul Party & Cocek! Brass Band.
Wednesday, April 20
Global Village celebrates the birthday of “El Rey/The King,” Latin percussion great Tito Puente. Plus music from Santana and Buffy Sainte Marie that is going into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry this year, and from the English Beat – currently in the midst of an extensive U.S. tour. And there’s new music from Carrie Rodriguez and Snarky Puppy, and more from April featured artists, Fanfare Ciocarlia.
Thursday, April 21
Global Village tours the Mediterranean – with visits along the way to Italy (for an Italian Afrobeat group, the Mamud Band), the Middle East, Algeria, Spain and, taking a slight detour to the Adriatic, Balkan sounds by way of America from both Slavic Soul Party and the Raya Brass Band.
Friday, April 22
Global Village celebrates Earth Day with songs from Tom Lehrer, Jimmy Cliff, Marvin Gaye, Chicago Afrobeat Project and more. Plus birthday salutes to Latin boogaloo star Joe Cuba and Hawaiian guitar great Gabby Pahinui.
