Monday, April 4
Global Village kicks off the April feature celebrating the 20th anniversary of acclaimed Romanian brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia with a signature tune from the group’s debut release. Plus birthday salutes to English folk rock bassist Danny Thompson, South African legend Hugh Masekela, blues great Muddy Waters, and Latin jazz pianist Michel Camilo – and a special salute to Square Root Day!
Tuesday, April 5
Global Village celebrates the birthday of one of the most influential violinists of the English folk rock scene, Dave Swarbrick, with music he did both with Fairport Convention and with Martin Carthy. Plus April featured artists Fanfare Ciocarlia from the Devil’s Tale album with Canadian guitarist Adrian Raso, and new music from Western Sahara’s Aziza Brahim and Las Hermanas Caronni from Argentina.
Wednesday, April 6
Several generations of soukous are featured this time in the Global Village – from the ‘father of Congolese music’, Le Grand Kalle, to one of the giants of the style, Tabu Ley Rochereau, along with one of the later stars, Sam Mangwana, and a new group reviving the classic sound, Black Bazar. Plus Bill Frisell, Willie Bobo, Steely Dan, and some rockin’ twist music from ‘60s Spain.
Thursday, April 7
More from April featured aritists Fanfare Ciocarlia, birthday salutes to influential Nigerian drummer Olatunji, Latin jazz and soul percussionist Mongo Santamaria, and sitar legend Ravi Shankar, and a little something to celebrate National Beer Day.
Friday, April 8
Global Village heads to South Africa for both classic recordings and some new and contemporary releases. Highlights include music from the Soul Brothers, Mahlathini & the Mahotella Queens, the African Jazz Pioneers, Ladysmith Black Mambazo – and new releases from Max-Hobo, Afrika Mamas, and the Rough Guide to South African Jazz.
