Billy Strayhorn & Other Birthday Celebrations, Trombones & Veterans Day With The Airmen Of Note

Night Train highlights some jazz trombones – including trombone great J.J. Johnson, and new releases from trombonists Michael Dease, Wayne Wallace, and the Band of Bones.

Also more music from November featured artist Billy Strayhorn - his compositions performed by saxophonist Johnny Hodges and pianists Fred Hersch and Joey Alexander, and a guest appearance with singer Sathima Bea Benjamin – and 2016 NEA Jazz Masters Gary Burton and Pharoah Sanders. Plus new music from soul-jazz and blues organist George Papageorge, guitarist Brad Allen Williams, and John Ellis & Double Wide.

Night Train celebrates birthdays of a long list of artists (Hubert Laws, Houston Person, Enrico Morricone, Paul Bley, Warren Wolf and Mose Allison); highlights music from artists with regional concerts in the next few days (Sean Jones, LAGQ, Pete Christlieb); highlights more music from November featured artists Billy Strayhorn and the 2016 NEA Jazz Masters; and features new music from the Mitchel Forman Trio, Ben Paterson, Antonio Adolfo, and the Mack Avenue Superband.

Wednesday 11.11.15 

Night Train celebrates Veterans Day with performances from the Airmen of Note, the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. In hour one they are joined by special guest vocalist Roberta Gambarini and in hour two, it’s critically acclaimed vibraphonist Joe Locke.

Thursday 11.12.15 

Night Train highlights guitarists tonight – including Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, Calvin Keys, Sheryl Bailey, George Benson (from his debut as leader), the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (from their Guitar Heroes tribute album), and Frank Potenza’s salute to Joe Pass.
