September Feature – Reggae Group Third World + Van Morrison’s 70th And New Month/New Music Time

Monday, August 31

Global Village celebrates the 70th birthday of Van Morrison with some classic tracks and a guest appearance he made with the Chieftains. Plus a final visit with August featured artist Jordi Savall – this time with music from both volumes of The Celtic Viol; a birthday salute to world chamber jazz pioneer Paul Winter; and new music from Spiro, Tipsy Oxcart, and Seckou Keita.

Tuesday, September 1

Global Village highlights some new releases featuring some influential African artists – Amadou Balake, Les Ambassadeurs, and Amara Toure. Plus a birthday salute to Gloria Estefan and the start of the September feature celebrating one of the longest running groups in reggae – Third World.

Wednesday, September 2

Global Village continues with more music from September feature artists, the reggae group Third World. Plus birthdays of two artists who brought together South American music and jazz – samba jazz pioneer Laurindo Almeida, and new tango artist and former Astor Piazzolla band member Pablo Ziegler;  music from the new Forro in the Dark Plays Zorn album for John Zorn’s birthday; Cambodian-rock band Dengue Fever, and new music from Brazil’s Flavia Coehlo.

Thursday, September 3

Global Village highlights African-inspired music by artists from other parts of the world, including “Mother Africa” from Santana, guitarist John Scofield, D.C. based band Elikeh, Spain’s Alma Afrobeat Ensemble, and Canada’s Souljazz Orchestra.

Friday, September 4

Each month, the Global Village New Month/New Music show features the best of new world music releases.  Highlights this time include:

The return of September featured artists Third World’s debut album for the first time in over two decades

The Rough Guide to Psychedelic Cumbia compilation

A new Essential compilation to mark Van Morrison’s 70th birthday

Kora player BallakeSissoko and cellist Vincent Segal

Acclaimed ‘desert blues’ band Terakaft

Contemporary Ethiopian band Qwanqwa

And an intriguing project from the Juli Wood Quartet of jazz versions of traditional Finnish tunes.
