Global Village explores the classical world – music that brings together Western classical and world influences, along with music inspired by Indian and Arabic classical traditions. Among the artists featured – Kirk Elliott from his new album with the Orchestra of Unmitigated Gaul, Tunisian oud player Anouar Brahem’s latest release and his first with a string orchestra, and a new album from Paquito D’Rivera with the classical Quinteto Cimarron. And as usual, we take some detours along the way, including for some ‘60s garage band music from Spain and Richard Thompson’s first solo album (and reportedly the worst selling album on Warner Bros. Records).

Global Village celebrates birthdays of pianist Ruben Gonzalez of the Buena Vista Social Club, Brazilian guitarist and accordionist Sivuca, Miles Davis (with music from the Miles from India project), and Peggy Lee (with a little world music gem). Plus new music from Omar Sosa, Samba Toure, and Slim Ali & the Hodi Boys – and more from May featured artist Stevie Wonder.
Wednesday, May 27
Global Village celebrates birthdays of Canadian singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn and singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, highlights more music from May featured artist Stevie Wonder, and explores some music from Mali, including this year’s Best Group winner in the Songlines Music Awards, kora players Toumani and Sidiki Diabate.

This time in the Global Village – music from Buika, Bebo (Valdes),Bossacucanova, Bembeya (Jazz National), and lots of brass – including the Bollywood Brass Band, the Crescent City’s New Birth Brass Band, and Romanian gypsy brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia with gypsy jazz guitarist Adrian Raso.

This time in the Global Village we give the drummers (and percussionists) some – with music from drummer Ginger Baker, tabla player Sameer Gupta, conguero Poncho Sanchez, and percussionist Airto. Plus a final track from May featured artist Stevie Wonder, new music from Fatoumata Diawara with Roberto Fonseca, and some Crescent City sounds from the New Birth Brass Band.
