St. Patrick’s Day Party, A Kora Extravaganza & Latin Rock, Soul, Jazz And More

Latin rock, soul, jazz and psychedelia this time in the Global Village, including music from the legendary Mongo Santamaria, a rising star on the Cuban jazz scene – Harold Lopez-Nussa, music from the Rough Guide to Latin Psychedelia, and a song from War that was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame this year.

Tuesday, March 17

Special: Global Village celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with a wide array of Irish sounds, from traditional to contemporary, classic recordings and recent releases. Among the artists featured: Van Morrison, Lunasa, Kila, the Chieftains, Afro Celt Sound System and new music from Altan and the Celtic Café compilation.

Wednesday, March 18

This time in the Global Village, listen for classics from Bob Marley & the Wailers, Willie Bobo and Joe Cuba, Balkan beats from Besh O Drom, Flamenco Nuevo from Spain’s Radio Tarifa.There's also more from women in world music for the March Women’s History Month feature, including Afro-Peruvian pioneer Susana Baca and Catherine Tate from a concert in tribute to Kirsty MacColl.

Thursday, March 19

Global Village highlights artists from across the African continent – including Nigeria’s BLO (often credited as Africa’s first rock band), the Central African Republic’s Bibi Tanga & the Selenites (named for moon creatures in an H.G. Wells story), Uganda’s Geoffrey Oryema, the critically acclaimed Congelese band Staff Benda Bilili/ For the March women in world music feature, hear music from Grammy winner and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Angelique Kidjo, guitarist Leni Stern, and sitarist Anoushka Shankar with half-sister Norah Jones.

It’s a kora extravaganza this time in the Global Village, with a wide array of kora styles from the more traditional to unusual musical fusions from violinist Regina Carter, singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, the Kora Band, the World Kora Trio and more.
