Night Train (along with Global Village and Crossroads) features music from Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipients throughout February. This week Night Train focuses in on jazz honoree Miles Davis - with music from the legendary artist, covers & tributes, recordings by members of his various bands, and specials that highlight his many styles and two of his classic recordings.
Monday, February 23
Night Train kicks off ‘Miles Week,’ celebrating the music of Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipient Miles Davis, with a special ‘Miles Night’ – with music from Miles himself (including a rare guest appearance with Shirley Horn), along with tributes and recordings featuring various members of his bands. Among the highlights, new releases from John Scofield, Louis Hayes, Richard Galliano and Jacky Terrasson; Conrad Herwig’s Latin Side of Miles; and 2015 NEA Jazz Master (and former Miles band mate) George Coleman.
Tuesday, February 24
Night Train marks the birthday of David ‘Fathead’ Newman with music he did as a leader and in the band of Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Ray Charles. Plus more music from this week’s Grammy Lifetime spotlight artist, Miles Davis, including a Jazz Profiles special that explores his many different musical styles – and new music from Joe Alterman, Eddie Henderson and Chick Corea.
Wednesday, February 25
Night Train marks the birthday of Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and music legend Enrico Caruso with music from a tribute album done by jazz saxophonist Joe Lovano. Plus more for the Miles Davis week feature, celebrating that Lifetime Achievement honoree – tonight with music from band members Jimmy Cobb and John Coltrane, along with a Jazz Profiles special two exploring his classic release, and the best-selling jazz album to this day, Kind of Blue.
Thursday February 26
Night Train wraps up the February feature and Miles Davis week with a special about Miles’ groundbreaking fusion album, Bitches Brew, and music from some of the artists who appeared on it with him, including Wayne Shorter (a 2015 Grammy Lifetime Achievement honoree), John McLaughlin, and Dave Holland. Plus new music from cellist Akua Dixon and organist Tony Monaco.
