World Psychedelia & Birthdays Of Ladysmith’s Joseph Shabalala, Elvis Costello & Alice Coltrane

Monday August 25

Global Village marks the birthdays of Elvis Costello and guitarist Pat Martino; highlights more from August featured artist, Toumani Diabate - this time from the groundbreaking album he did with trombonist Roswell Rudd called MaliCool; and showcases new music from the Brooklyn Afrobeat band, Zongo Junction, Latin soul band Henry Brun & the Latin Playerz, and reunited UK roots reggae group, Black Slate.                              

Tuesday August 26

Global Village highlights some different approaches to Latin music from the Sones de Mexico Ensemble, pan-Latin jazz band Grupo Cha Cha, Brazil-grass group Matuto, tango from vibes player Gary Burton, and neo-tango from Spain’s Otros Aires. Plus Nigerian star Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey and Brazilian great Milton Nascimento.

Wednesday  August 27

Global Village celebrates the birthdays of harpist Alice Coltrane and the ‘Barefoot Diva of Cape Verde', Cesaria Evora. Plus more music from August featured artist Toumani Diabate, the latest from Quantic and Kavita Shah, and music from Maya Angelou’s Miss Calpyso album.

Thursday  August 28

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Joseph Shabalala, the founder, lead singer, and musical director of the acclaimed South African vocal group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo - with music the group did on Paul Simon’s Graceland album and on several releases of their own.  Plus August featured artist, kora master Toumani Diabate, with both banjo master Bela Fleck and world-jazz guitarist Leni Stern – and new music from Laetitia Zonzambe, Playing for Change 3, and the Rough Guide to Arabic Jazz.

Friday  August 29

Global Village goes psychedelic with some Sixties inspired global sounds from Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers, ‘70s Nigerian band Semi Colon, guitarist Nguyen Le, and new music from the Cumbia All Stars, the Bombay Royale and compilations of psychedelic Cambodian and Algerian music.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
