Remembering Kenny Drew, Jr. And Celebrating Big Six-Ohs For Newport And Pat Metheny

Night Train celebrates the birthday of Pittsburgh soul jazz organist Bill Heid; begins a week-long salute to pianist Kenny Drew, Jr. who passed away last week; and continues a month-long celebration of the Newport Jazz Festival’s 60th anniversary – this time with music from vibes star Warren Wolf, who performed at this year’s festival, and in hour two, a performance from organist Joey DeFrancesco at Newport.

Tuesday 8.12.14

Night Train celebrates Pat Metheny’s 60th birthday with music from throughout his career, including selections as a solo artist, in the Pat Metheny group, with Charlie Haden,  and as a guest with Abbey Lincoln, Gary Burton, and Joshua Redman. Plus more for the August feature the 60th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival – this time with fest performances from Miles Davis and Ella Fitzgerald – and new music from Sean Jones, Jimmy Cobb’s Original Mob, singer Curtis Stigers, and the trio of Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart.

Wednesday 8.13.14

It’s a jazz piano night on the Night Train with birthday salutes to pianists George Shearing and Mulgrew Miller; the week-long  tribute to pianist Kenny Drew, Jr.; music from pianists at the Newport Jazz Festival – including Thelonious Monk, Vijay Iyer and Oscar Peterson ; and new piano releases from Eric Reed, Chris Parker, and Ted Rosenthal.

Thursday 8.14.14

Night Train celebrates several birthdays – pianist and singer Ben Sidran, vocalist Lorez Alexandria, organist Tony Monaco, and pianist and singer Jeannie Cheatham. Also more music from Newport, including live performances from Horace Silver and two progressive new artists who appeared at this year’s festival -  Theo Croker and Vijay Iyer.  Plus new music from Cyrus Chestnut live at Smoke, JC Stylles with a tribute to Art Blakey, and guitarist Charlie Apicella & Iron City.
