Global Village begins a new month’s feature – highlighting music from internationally-renowned kora player Toumani Diabate. Tonight’s show will feature music from the Grammy-winning album, In the Heart of the Moon, that he did with Ali Farka Toure, and the remarkable Songhai project with new-flamenco group Ketama, and English folk rock bassist Danny Thompson. Plus a birthday salute to the great Irish singer Moya Brennan, with music she did as a solo artist and with the popular band, Clannad, and new music from two Rough Guide compilations – Celtic Music and Arabic Café.
Tuesday August 5
This time in the Global Village, it’s legends revisited – including different takes on jazz classics from John Coltrane (from Carlos Santana with John McLaughlin), Django Reinhardt (by Les Primitifs du Futur) and Charlie Parker (from Carmen Souza) - plus folk music revisited and reimagined in the Imagined Village, and music of reggae legend Bob Marley revisited and remixed on the Legends Remixed album.
Wednesday August 6
SPECIAL: For Charlie Haden’s birthday, Global Village offers a rebroadcast of the tribute program that aired shortly after his passing. In this special edition of the show, the world music side of Charlie Haden is showcased in music he did with the Liberation Music Orchestra, Cuban pianist Gonazlo Rubalcaba, Greek guitarist Nana Simopoulos, Portuguese Guitar master Carlos Paredes, and as part of an international trio with Brazilian guitarist Egberto Gismonti and Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek.
Thursday August 7
Global Village marks birthdays of one of the rising stars of Malian music, Bassekou Kouyate, and Brazilian tropicalia great, Caetano Veloso. Plus more music from August featured artist, Toumani Diabate, including a guest appearance with Bassekou Kouyate, and an album he did with American bluesman Taj Mahal.
Friday August 8
Global Village highlights some unusual musical meetings this time – including the Chieftains with Linda Ronstadt and Los Lobos; David Lindley and Henry Kaiser with musicians from Madagascar; the Bahama Soul Club with Bessie Smith; and the meeting of Cuban and African musicians (including August featured artist, Toumani Diabate) that had been the original plan for the first Buena Vista Social Club recording.
