Afrobeat, Asian Rock and Ernest Ranglin Specials This Week in the Global Village

Monday  June 16

An Afrobeat special this time in the Global Village to mark the birthday of Femi Kuti. Music from his father, Fela, and brother Seun Kuti, Australia’s Liberators, Italy’s Mamud Band, the U.S. based Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band, and the new Sia Tolno album featuring Fela music director and drummer Tony Allen are also featured.

Tuesday  June 17

Global Village explores some early and contemporary rock-influenced music from Asia, including new music from China’s Shanren, and the new Rough Guide to Psychedelic Cambodia and Sound of Siam Vol. 2 compilations. Also Okinawa’s Shoukichi Kina, Vietnamese singer Huong Thanh, and the Pop Yeh Yeh compilation of ‘60s rock from Malaysia.

Wednesday June 18

Global Village highlights Latin soul from Poncho Sanchez, Ocote Soul Sounds, and Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers, and two ‘70s African rarities from Afro Funk and Senegal’s Royal Band of Thies – plus the 4th Ward Afro-Klezmer Orchestra, and some Brazilian sounds from singer Luciana Souza and flute man Herbie Mann.

Thursday June 19

Global Village marks the birthday of June featured artist, Jamiacan guitarist Ernest Ranglin, with music from his solo projects  – including the new Bless Up album, as well as recordings with Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander, as lead guitarist and musical director for Jimmy Cliff, and as a guest artist with the Skatalites, the Melodians, Millie Small, Jackie Mittoo, and more.

Friday June 20

Accordion mania strikes once again in the Global Village, this time a varied selection that includes the House Band’s Chris Parkinson, acclaimed Finnish accordionist Maria Kalaniemi, and one of Italy’s foremost neo-folk ensembles.  Plus music from Paris Combo, Canada’s  Jaffa Road, and a special accordion surprise at the end of the show.
