COMCARE’s children’s mental health programs are moving from the east side to a new location in downtown Wichita on May 2. Hear Carla Eckels’ full story below.
The staff is moving into a newly renovated space in the former Rainbows United building located at 350 S. Broadway.
COMECARE of Sedgwick County serves more than a thousand children a year. Executive Director, Marilyn Cook says the move will allow them to be at a more centralized location.
"Part of the reason is that we can have all of our providers together, but it also has a 6,000 square foot ADA playground for the kids that we are seeing," Cook says. "We (also) have two programs called “Proud of Me” which are therapeutic services for preschoolers."
Cook says the “Proud of Me” program is designed for young children.
"It's a program for kids who are between the ages of 2 and 5 whose behaviors have gotten them into trouble and sometimes kicked out of daycare centers and preschools," she says. "We've had a lot of success in that program."
About 60 case managers are moving to the building. Therapy staff and medical providers will be housed in an adjacent facility.
COMCARE treats children that have early onset of schizophrenia, hyperactivity problems and other behavior issues along with children that have depression and anxiety.
