Kansas Supreme Court To Review Appeals Court Abortion Ruling
The Kansas Supreme Court has agreed to review an appeals court ruling in January finding that the Kansas Constitution creates “a fundamental right to abortion.”
The high court’s decision was expected after the Kansas Court of Appeals upheld a trial judge’s decision to block Kansas’ so-called "dismemberment ban."
The 2015 ban was challenged by two Overland Park doctors who operate one of three abortion clinics in the state.
Janet Crepps is an attorney with the Center for Reproductive Rights, which represented the doctors. She says the Supreme Court’s decision to review the case "is a recognition by the court that this challenge raises a really fundamental question, which is whether or not the Kansas Constitution protects the right to abortion.”
The court is not expected to issue its ruling until late this year or early next year.
