Gov. Sam Brownback appointed Faith Maughan to the 18th Judicial District Court on Monday.
The 18th district covers all of Sedgwick County. The state's 31 Judicial Districts serve as trial courts for the state; they oversee all civil and criminal cases.
Maughan currently serves as judge in the city of Colwich and as prosecutor for the cities of Maize and Park City. On her website, she describes herself as a "pro-life, constitutional conservative, veteran with her roots in small-town Kansas."
House bill 2019--which was recently signed into law---replaces statewide, attorney-led commission that screened applicants and nominated several finalists from which the governor chose. Now, Brownback selects the judge, subject to Senate approval.
Maughan is one of the first judges chosen since this new law. Brownback says because she has served the south-central Kansas area since becoming a lawyer, she is well qualified for the job.
The Kansas Senate must now confirm her appointment.
