The City of Wichita is considering adding an ordinance that would allow food trucks to park and serve food downtown and on city streets.
The proposed change also would establish a single permit for food truck operators giving them permission to set up shop anywhere the trucks are allowed. Right now they have to get an individual permit for each location they visit.
City planner Scott Knebel says current ordinances are outdated.
"They date back primarily to the 60s and 70s and don't really address modern operations of food trucks, which are largely based on moving from place to place, day to day," he said at a Wichita City Council workshop Tuesday.
Members of the Wichita Food Truck Coalition say they have been working with the Metro Area Planning Department to draft the ordinance, which also includes a requirement that the trucks have an automatic fire-control system if they cook food that generates grease-laden vapors.
In an e-mail, the coalition said it hopes to have the new rules in place in about a month.
