The city of Wichita hired a consulting group Tuesday to help attract a Major League-affiliated baseball team to the area for the first time in a decade.
Wichita has been without a Minor League Baseball team since the Wranglers left after the 2007 season; city council members say it’s time to change that.
The council approved a $50,000 contract with Beacon Sports Capital Partners, LLC, a Massachusetts-based consulting firm that has already been working with the city on plans for a new team, and a new stadium to replace Lawrence-Dumont.
Beacon will contact and negotiate with leagues and team executives on behalf of the city.
Council members also approved $200,000 for any maintenance and repairs needed at Lawrence Dumont Stadium before the Wichita Wingnuts--an independent baseball team--start their 2018 season.
