Wichita’s Board of Education selected a new member Monday night. Ernestine Krehbiel was appointed in a 4-2 vote.

Krehbiel is a former president for the Kansas chapter of the League of Women Voters. She also taught in the school district. She says her priority is simple.

“It’s kids -- that’s the priority," says Krehbiel. "I’m particularly interested in making sure that kids have adequate education whatever their needs is.”

Before the vote, board member Joy Eakins referred back to Krehbiel's comments during her interview about wanting to be a voice for voiceless students.

"She had done that for the length of her career," Eakins said. "So I think she understands what that means."

Krehbiel will replace Barb Fuller, who resigned when she moved out of the district. Krehbiel will start in January with the new board members elected last month.

Board member Betty Arnold voted for candidate Sondra Luke, and Mike Rodee voted for Rhonda Cox.
