Members of Wichita’s school board interviewed three candidates Wednesday night to fill the seat that opened up when former District 3 representative Barbara Fuller resigned last month.
Sondra Luke was the first interviewed. Luke and several members of her family graduated from the district, and she had a one-word answer when asked about the district's biggest issue.
“Brownback," she said.
Next was Ernestine Krehbiel, a former teacher and former president of the League of Women Voters. She said the board needs to be a voice in Topeka for the district's students.
“We have to remember that that’s the basic thing why we’re here," she said.
Rhonda Cox went last. Cox has four children in the district and said that while there's a lot that frustrates her in education, she looks for solutions.
"And if I can’t have a solution I’m going to go to whoever I think can help obtain that and I’m going to talk to them," Cox said.
The board is scheduled to make its final decision on Monday. Whichever candidate is selected will serve the remaining two years of Fuller's term.
