Wichita Extends Hours For Outdoor Events During NCAA Tournament

Outdoor community events related to next month’s NCAA basketball tournament in Wichita won’t have to shut down before midnight.

The City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday that allows extended hours of operation for entertainment activities in what’s called the “Downtown Core Area.” The area is defined as the area from Central on the north; Washington on the east; Kellogg on the south, and Seneca on the west.

The city’s current policy limits events to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday.

The council had to declare a public emergency in order to approve the new policy and give staff enough time to review applications for events with extended hours.

The first rounds of the NCAA Tournament will take place March 15-18 at Intrust Bank Arena.
