The Metropolitan Area Planning Department is hosting a meeting for residents of Delano to discuss the future of the historic neighborhood.

The city adopted the long-range Delano Neighborhood Revitalization Plan back in 2001. It was driven largely by the Delano Business, Clergy and Neighborhood Associations. The groups wanted to address aging infrastructure, the loss of businesses and declining home ownership in the area.

Goals included introducing a special zoning area to protect historic landmarks such as the Kansas Masonic Home and Fire Engine House #4, and making enhancements to storefronts along Douglas Avenue and Seneca Boulevard. The plan also included establishing an Urban Village in the area now home to the Delano Catalyst Site and future Advanced Learning Library.

Now, the planning department says it’s time for updates. They’re working with the Wichita Downtown Development Corporation and a group of landscape architecture students from Kansas State University to gather input from residents in Delano. The feedback will help shape an updated revitalization plan.

The community engagement session is at 4:30 Thursday afternoon in the Ronald Reagan Building in downtown Wichita.
