Number Of 'On Hold' Kansas Voter Registrations Rising Again

The number of voter registrations on hold in Kansas is rising again.

The state's new proof-of-citizenship requirement has many new voters in limbo until they prove they're U.S. citizens.

Secretary of State Kris Kobach's office says that almost 17,700 registrations are on hold now.

Those "on hold" have not yet provided a birth certificate, passport or other papers documenting their U.S. citizenship to election officials.

The figure peaked at about 18,500 in October but then dropped to fewer than 17,200.

The proof-of-citizenship requirement took effect in January.

Kris Kobach says it prevents election fraud, but critics say it suppresses voter turnout.
