Randall Munroe is the creator of the website xkcd.com and the author of the books What If?, Thing Explainer, and his latest, How To: Absurd Scientific Advice for Common Real-World Problems.

I recently visited with Munroe about the site and the books--both of which have millions of fans--and Munroe’s trajectory from a NASA roboticist to a full-time internet comic strip creator. Here’s our conversation:
