People in the community of Hesston will gather on Sunday for a memorial in remembrance of the victims of a mass shooting last year at Excel Industries.

On February 25, 2016 a gunman killed three people at the plant. Fourteen others were injured. The shooter, an employee at the plant, was later shot and killed by police.

The Hesston Community Foundation and the Hesston Ministerial Alliance are hosting "The Light Shines in the Darkness" service a few days before the one year anniversary of the tragedy so those who were affected can grieve however they wish on the actual date.

Susan Lamb, director of the Hesston Community Foundation, says the town has tried to be a positive model of recovery, adding that she hopes no one experiences the pain Hesston endured.

"But in a broken world, we realize that's probably not realistic," she says.

The service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 19 at the Hesston High School Gymnasium.
