Visitors will be allowed to bring concealed guns into the Kansas Statehouse beginning in July unless legislative leaders intervene.
Top lawmakers are reviewing the issue at a meeting on Thursday. If they don’t act this month, holders of concealed carry permits will be able to enter the building with their weapons.
The Republican-dominated Legislature enacted a law last year aimed at allowing concealed weapons in more public buildings. It says local governments and state agencies may continue to ban the weapons through 2017 but must declare publicly that they’ve developed adequate building security plans.
The same law says concealed guns will be allowed in the Statehouse in July unless legislative leaders declare that the building has adequate security.
Legislators are already allowed to carry concealed firearms.
