Gov. Sam Brownback is requesting federal help for areas of Kansas hurt by recent flooding.

The Department of Energy Management issued a release about the governor's request last week. The disaster declaration request was sent to the Small Business Administration as a result of flooding that occurred in Cherokee County, Kan., late last month.

Huge rainfalls caused a record crest of the Spring River, which runs near Baxter Springs and through much of the county. The river crested at a record 31.8 feet; the flood stage near Baxter Springs is 14 feet. Multiple buildings were damaged.

If the disaster declaration is approved, it can open the door for SBA funding of low-interest disaster loans to repair or replace damaged property.
