Birthdays Galore + Latin Jazz and Monday Night @ The Movies

Night Train celebrates a wealth of birthdays this night – including jazz legend Thelonious Monk, songwriter and singer Oscar Brown, Jr., Monk Montgomery (Wes’s brother), trumpeter Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison, composers Vernon Duke and Verdi, pianist Junior Mance. Plus another Monday Night at the Movies as Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency for music from and related to films (including a little surprise tonight from Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm!), and new music from the Brad Mehldau Trio, John Beasley, and Joey Alexander.

Another impressive list of jazz artists born on this date featured tonight on the Night Train, including legendary drummer and band leader Art Blakey, pianist Brian Jackson (who worked with Gil Scott-Heron), drummer Billy Higgins, and saxophonist Curtis Amy. Plus a special about one of Blakey’s lesser known Messenger lineups in hour two, and Latin Jazz from Bobby Sanabria for the October feature.

Wednesday 10.12.16

Night Train continues the October Latin Jazz feature tonight with an Antonio Carlos Jobim classic, Latin jazz versions of John Coltrane classics and more – plus birthday salutes to guitarist and former Dizzy Gillespie band member Ed Cherry, tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, and organist Mel Rhyne, best known for his work with guitar great Wes Montgomery – and new music from Bill Evans, Allen Toussaint, Charlie Hunter, Nels Cline and Steve Turre.

Thursday 10.13.16

Another night of great jazz birthdays, including legendary pianist Art Tatum, master bassist Ray Brown, vibes players Johnny Lytle and Terry Gibbs and saxophonist and 2016 NEA Jazz Master Pharoah Sanders. Plus new music from Fred Hersch and 2015 NEA Jazz Master George Coleman.
