In conjunction with the April Global Village Fanfare Ciocarlia feature, a show devoted to music from their home of Romania. Along with music from Fanfare, there’s a variety of traditional and contemporary bands and styles – including critically acclaimed groups like Taraf de Haidouks and Mahala Rai Banda, and new music from an emerging band, Zmei3.
Wednesday, April 27
Global Village marks Independence Days in Sierra Leone and Togo and Freedom Day (commemorating the first democratic elections) in South Africa with music from those countries – features the new 20th anniversary release from April featured artists Fanfare Ciocarlia – and highlights new music from St. Lucia’s Taj Weekes and flamenco artist Paco El Lobo.
Thursday, April 28
Global Village highlights more music from April featured artists Fanfare Ciocarlia – this time from their critically acclaimed Queens & Kings album that teamed them up with some of the world’s best Roma singers. Plus birthday salutes to guitarists Leni Stern and Steve Khan, Latin jazz pioneer Mario Bauza, and salsa star Willie Colon, and new music from the New York Gypsy All Stars, Carrie Rodriguez, and the Rough Guide to a World of Psychedelia.
Friday, April 29
Global Village marks birthdays of two great Latin artists – percussionist Ray Barretto and flutist Dave Valentin – and also of Willie Nelson (with some music from his reggae album Countryman). Plus new music from New Zealand’s Fat Freddy’s Drop, and a final fling with April featured artists Fanfare Ciocarlia.
