Global Village pays a visit to Colombia for a wide array of styles and artists – including the popular contemporary rock group Aterciopelados, Carlos Vives (from his 2014 album that took home two Latin Grammys), the Afrosound of Colombia Vol. 2 and Colombia! The Golden Age of Discos Fuentes compilations, and a contemporary classical album featuring guitar music of Colombia.
Tuesday, March 22
Global Village pays tribute to eclectic and adventurous Brazilian percussionist Naná Vasconcelos. The critically acclaimed artist released a series of recordings under his own name and as part of the Codona trio with Don Cherry and Colin Walcott. He was a longstanding partner with both Egberto Gismonti and Pat Metheny, and a much in-demand guest artist with such diverse performers as Laurie Anderson, the Talking Heads, the Gipsy Kings, Trilok Gurtu, Gato Barbieri, Paul Simon and more. We’ll highlight music from his own releases and some of his many guest appearances in this special edtion of Global Village.

Saxophones go global this time in the Global Village – with music from saxophonists from Nigeria (Femi Kuti), Norway (Jan Garbarek), Brazil (Paulo Moura), Jamaica (Roland Alphonso of the Skatalites), and France (reggae saxophonist Stepper). Plus music from William Onyeabor, Sly & Robbie,and the Pipperment Twist compilation of ‘60s twist and rock instrumentals from Spain.
Thursday, March 24
Global Village celebrates birthdays of harmonica player Lee Oskar (of the group War), oboist Paul McCandless (from the group Oregon), and bassist and cofounder of the German avant-rock and world band Can, Holger Czukay. Plus more music from March featured artists 17 Hippies and Solas – and new music from the Bosnian band Divanhana and Tuareg group Terakaft.
Friday, March 25
Global Village marks birthdays of salsa pioneer Johnny Pacheco, Chuck Greenburg of the world chamber jazz fusion band Shadowfax, and the Queen of Soul – Aretha Franklin. Plus more music from March featured artists 17 Hippies and Solas, a classic from Afrobeat creator Fela, and some contemporary salsa from a new release from Los Hacheros.
