Global Village marks International Day of Peace, a day set aside by the United Nations in support of world peace since 1982. The program highlights topical tunes from a variety of artists from around the world, including September featured artists Third World, Vieux Farka Toure, Van Morrison, Sameer Gupta, the Holmes Brothers, Edwin Starr and more.
Tuesday, September 22
Global Village celebrates the birthday of Nigerian music giant, King Sunny Ade, with some of his classic recordings and guest appearances with Brazil’s Jorge Ben and Cameroon’s Manu Dibango. Plus music from September featured artists Third World’s classic Journey to Addis album and a solo project from band member Cat Coore, new music from the Souljazz Orchestra, and a live performance from Miami Latin funk band, Palo!
Wednesday, September 23
Global Village pays tribute to acclaimed Jamaican trombonist Rico Rodriguez, who passed away earlier this month. We’ll hear him as a leader, working with Two Tone groups, the Specials and Selector - where he achieved his greatest acclaim, as a special guest with Joan Armatrading, John Martyn, and Toots & the Maytals, and as part of the Jazz Jamaica lineup.

Global Village highlights some unusual musical meetings – including the Chieftains with Linda Ronstadt and Los Lobos; David Lindley and Henry Kaiser with musicians from Madagascar; the Bahama Soul Club with Bessie Smith; and the meeting of Cuban and African musicians that had been the original plan for the first Buena Vista Social Club recording.
Friday, September 25
Global Village highlights some meetings of the West African kora and jazz– with internationally renowned kora player Toumani Diabate performing with Herbie Hancock and Dee Dee Bridgewater; a solo project from acclaimed kora artist Ballake Sissoko; kora artist Sekou Kouyate guesting on an album from contemporary Cuban musician Roberto Fonseca; and the Pacific Northwest jazz group, the Kora Band.
