Budget Advances, But More Kansas Spending Work Ahead

This week, Kansas lawmakers approved a budget and sent it to the governor, but that doesn’t mean their budget work is done.

The spending plan eliminated a projected deficit, but doesn’t leave the state with much money.

Republican Rep. Ron Ryckman says they’ll be studying efficiency recommendations they hope can help build the savings account starting next year.

“Some of them could definitely be in place by ’17 or ’18, but the actions we take the rest of the session, some of them will have transformational effects four, five, six, seven years down the road,” Ryckman. says

Lawmakers will review new state revenue numbers in April. That could require them to amend the budget plan they’ve already approved.
