A student group has made a series of demands in response to claims of racism and discrimination at the University of Kansas. But as KPR’s Stephen Koranda reports, university officials would have trouble complying with at least one of the requests.
Students outlined the demands at a huge public meeting at KU. Some of the loudest cheers came when they said concealed weapons should be barred on campus.
That demand is at least partially pointed at Kansas lawmakers, because university officials won’t even have the power to bar guns on campus in 2017. Under current law, that’s when concealed weapons will be allowed on Kansas campuses and they can only be barred in buildings that have security measures like metal detectors.
KU currently does ban guns on campus, but unless state law is modified, that will come to an end in the not-too-distant future.
