Miranda Standau and her son Ben spoke with me about a colorful tribute he gave to his hero, the family’s pediatrician.
Miranda: Benjamin’s teacher, Ms. Ulrich at Dodge Elementary gave all the students an assignment to draw a picture of someone that was a hero to them in their community. So I asked Ben who he would like to draw a picture of, and he said Dr. Barker. I really thought it was a neat idea for his teacher just to bring awareness to the kids. She mentioned some examples but she didn’t say ‘doctor’ so it was nice that he came up with that on his own. Just to draw some attention to everyone around us that is helping us.
SJ: Did you give it to Dr. Barker?
Ben: Mmhmm
SJ: What did she say?
Ben: She said, ‘Thank you.’
SJ: Ben, why did you choose Dr. Barker?
Ben: Because I love her.
Miranda: She’s been a part of our family for about ten years now. I have six kids total. Ben is the second youngest. How old are you, Ben?
Ben: Six!
Miranda: Not yet. He’s five. He’s ready to be six.
Ben: I’m ready to be seven!
Miranda: We’re there all the time, luckily when we got to deliver the card, it was for a not-sick reason. We went in to get our flu shots, and it was the perfect time to bring it to her.
Ben: I wasn’t scared.
SJ: To get your shot?
Ben: But I was a little bit scared.
Miranda: She made it really quick and simple.
Ben: Maybe Dr. Barker will hang it on her wall at home.
